Beneath the Spiral

The story behind The Spore Oracle, written in the first person.

There is a moment in every journey when you realise you are no longer searching for an answer.

You are simply following a question.

I cannot tell you exactly when that moment arrived for me. Perhaps it was the first time I learned that forests are connected by hidden mycelial networks beneath the soil. Perhaps it was during a quiet walk beneath old trees, or while reading myths written by people separated from us by thousands of years, yet asking many of the same questions we still ask today.

What I do know is this.

The more I learned about the natural world, the less it seemed to resemble a machine.

It felt like a conversation.

Trees supporting one another through unseen relationships. Fungi transforming decay into new life. Seasons turning without haste. Nothing standing alone for very long. Everything becoming part of something larger than itself.

That quiet understanding stayed with me.

Along the way, I encountered experiences that profoundly changed the way I looked at nature and at my own place within it. They did not reveal secret truths, nor did they offer certainty. Instead, they encouraged a deeper curiosity — a sense that the world is often richer, stranger and more connected than our everyday routines allow us to notice.

Rather than providing answers, they left me with better questions.

Those questions became companions for many years.

I found myself reading mythology, psychology, folklore, natural history and philosophy. I filled notebooks with symbols, fragments of stories and observations gathered from woodland walks and quiet moments of reflection. None of it was intended for publication. It was simply my way of understanding the patterns I believed I was beginning to see.

Slowly, almost without my noticing, those fragments began to weave themselves together.

The Moon Glyphs appeared first.

Then came the Companion Spirits.

The Threshold Archetypes followed.

Each one became another thread in a tapestry that was never designed all at once, but discovered gradually through patience, revision and imagination.

That tapestry became The Spore Oracle.

It is not an ancient tradition rediscovered.

It is not a religion.

It does not claim hidden knowledge or ask for unquestioning belief.

It is an original mythology, inspired by forests, fungi, symbolism, psychology and humanity’s timeless habit of telling stories to understand both the world around us and the landscapes within us.

If there is a single hope I hold for this work, it is not that anyone agrees with it.

It is that it encourages people to slow down.

To step into a woodland without headphones.

To notice the changing light between seasons.

To recognise that decay is often the beginning of renewal.

To ask better questions.

The Spore Oracle continues to grow through The Spore Patch, an independent publishing studio founded with the belief that beautiful books can still matter, that thoughtful ideas deserve careful craftsmanship, and that creativity carries a responsibility to the living world that inspires it. That is why a portion of every success is pledged toward helping protect the landscapes from which this journey began.

Looking back, I no longer believe I created The Spore Oracle.

I think I followed it.

One quiet question at a time.

If these pages encourage you to look a little more closely at the world beneath your feet, to become more curious, more compassionate, or simply more willing to wonder, then they have already fulfilled their purpose.

Everything else is simply another turn of the Spiral.

Welcome.

Always onwards.
